HOW TO CREATE A WORDPRESS WEBSITE
FIRST STEPS:
- Choose a domain, then register and arrange hosting. This can be done with the one hosting provider company like Hostgator, Bluehost or Godaddy
- Install WordPress through your hosting provider. They can guide you on how to do this.
- Select a Theme template. You can select one of the free WordPress themes that come with your WordPress installation. There are limitations with the free version. I highly recommend the DIVI theme by Elegant Themes. More on this later.
- Check that SSL comes with your domain. Most do, but you’ll need to make changes on your WordPress settings tab to set it up correctly
- Add a security plugin. Some hosting companies will offer a free security plugin (for good reason) that is offered during the WordPress installation. I use the Pro Wordfence security plugin on all my websites. More on this later.
- Add your online store, if you want to sell products. You can sell any type of product that is physical, virtual or downloadable. You’ll need the Woocommerce plugin and a payment gateway like Stripe.
- Forms builder to capture leads. I use formidable forms. With the pro version of this plugin you can create custom forms with conditional logic, registration forms, contact forms, sales funnels, popup forms, quiz’s, surveys, polls and most importantly connect to email service provider like Mailchimp to create auto responders. More on this later.
Creating a website is a very hands on task that can get a little overwhelming, if you don’t know what your are doing or understand certain terminology. There are many things to consider and once you get a general idea of what you want, you’ll spend some time learning how plugins work, how to customize and understanding what features you need to accomplish what you have in mind. I learned how to create WordPress websites when I was pregnant with my twins (and they’re 12 now). So much has changed over the years. Payment gateways are more simiplar and technology has evolved to a whole new level making the creation of websites so much easier and more elegant. If you’re going to give website design a go, here are some things you’re going to run into that you should start thinking about. Consider the following:
- What do you want to create a website for?
- What do you want your website to do?
- How much traffic do you intend to drive to your website?
- What color scheme
- Logo and favicon
- Images (stock image and video library resource)
- Graphic design (use Canva, photoshop, paint.net etc.)
